God Won’t Budge {Recharge Wednesday LINKUP}

February 21, 2018 by Bethany McIlrath

If you're new here, you may want to subscribe to my RSS feed. Thanks for visiting!

“Come oooooonnnn,” is a phrase I mostly use in the kitchen. By the fridge. Holding something with a lid. Twist-off tops and I don’t get along because they will NOT budge.

In most cases, being inflexible, stubborn, or unmoving isn’t favorable.

So often it seems like if we just grip tighter or twist harder, we’ll have the opportunities we long for. We’ll find satisfaction. We’ll gain the missing ingredient and finally put together that idea we think is best for us.

But, if God’s the unmoving lid on a jar we’re fighting to get into, it’s probably not one we want to open.

God doesn’t budge, and that’s great news!

  • God will not break his promises
  • God’s Word will not pass away
  • God’s kingdom is unshakable
  • God’s foundation does not fall
  • God’s love can’t be lost
  • God’s plan is immovable
  • God’s judgement is perfect
  • God’s mind doesn’t shift
  • God cannot be swayed

Instead of being in our way, God’s lack of movement is meant to guide our way.

Sometimes, certainly, what seems “stuck” in our lives is just a matter of God’s timing. Other times, it’s God’s protection or teaching. There are even instances when God doesn’t “fix it” and the impossibility of change becomes apparent- leaving us all the more awed when He makes it possible anyway.

So, if you’re feeling stuck, and it seems like your prayers aren’t moving God, remember:

God’s stubbornness is our stability.

“He will be the stability of your times, abundance of salvation, wisdom, and knowledge; the fear of the LORD is Zion’s treasure.” –Isaiah 33:6

Our Savior isn’t unmoving in pride, but perfection. He isn’t slow, but sovereign. His unwillingness to depart from the way (though his loved ones tried to sway Him) led to our salvation. His unshakeable quality is the reason that death is defeated.

It is to our benefit that God won’t budge.

    Bethany,
I love the analogy. So many times I’ve held a jar of “my way” and I bulldoze forward trying to get it open, but thankfully “God’s stubbornness is our stability.” I look back over my life and I see how many times I am grateful that God didn’t budge….He is solid as a rock and His will is sovereign. Learning how to yield….great post!
    Blessings,
    Bev xx

Thank you, Bev! I’ve tried getting God to budge so many times too- and like you, I’m thankful He doesn’t! Yielding is a beautiful things : ) Blessings!

This is a great metaphor for the immovability of God, and I’ve struggled with this one in the past. (By the way, the image you created for this post is amazing — I’m trying to do better with this myself, so I’m paying attention to what I see!)

Thanks, Michele! (I’m enjoying growing in image-making…do you use Canva??)

“God’s stubbornness is our stability.” Loved the list of ways He won’t ever change!

Thank you! I love that list too!

I have learned not only to lean on “the everlasting arms”, but to lean INTO ” the everlasting arms.” There is a difference. It is submission and total reliance on God’s wisdom.

    • Bethany McIlrath says

      February 21, 2018 at 11:03 am

What a wonderful difference in that preposition. Amen!

Love this: “God’s stubbornness is our stability.” I remember how thankful I was that God never changes while my mom was getting worse with Alzheimer’s. It seemed like everything else around me was in flux, but God was solid.

    • Bethany McIlrath says

      February 22, 2018 at 10:11 am

Lisa, what a testimony to His faithfulness. I’m so thankful God does not change or shift.

Thank you Bethany, I can really relate this to my dear husband, God works in His time & His purpose, not mine, it’s a learning process for us all.
    He absolutely is our stability!
You are most welcome to drop by for a cup of inspiration.
