How to Refresh Your Time with God {Recharge Wednesday LINKUP}

February 27, 2019 by Debbie W. Wilson

If you're new here, you may want to subscribe to my RSS feed. Thanks for visiting!

“What did you want to be when you grew up?” our small group leader asked our group. Everyone offered sensible professions. I racked my brain and couldn’t recall one serious aspiration. I’d dreamed of flying to magical lands like Peter Pan or riding horses and nabbing bad guys like Annie Oakley.

On my report card, my second-grade teacher wrote, “Debbie does good work, but daydreams too much.” Didn’t all children carry fairies to school? Little did I realize these were clues to my personality and how I’d connect with God.

How Should I Connect with God?

Do you feel like your relationship with God should look a certain way? Do you compare yourself with other people and chastise yourself for not being like them?

The Psalmist wrote, “Thank you for making me so wonderfully complex! Your workmanship is marvelous—how well I know it” (Psalm 139:14, NLT).

Our Creator didn’t knit a bunch of sock dolls from the same ball of yarn. He wove different personalities to reflect His glory and display His creativity. If no two fingerprints are the same, why would we think everyone connects with God the same way?

When I was a young nursing mother another mom in our church nursery shuddered in disdain when she heard I had my quiet time with God at night. She straightened her shoulders and boasted about meeting with God before dawn. “We are children of the light,” she added.

I thought it was dark before dawn. And doesn’t the Bible say God neither slumbers nor sleeps?

How Do You Best Connect with God?

Below are some ways women from different ages and stages of life say they connect with God. I appreciate how their relationships flow from their individual personalities.

  • A friend views her quiet time as a romantic date. She lights a candle and looks forward to spending time with the One who longs to share life with her.
  • A young mother and pastor’s wife, who grew up dancing, uses music to direct her thoughts to God.
  • Another woman creates art with Scripture to help her remember God’s Word.
  • A gal prays while she walks her dog every morning.
  • A friend, who is a busy CEO, starts her day with a Bible study and a kale/jalapeño smoothie! If she has to catch an early flight, she carries her devotional on the plane.
  • Some mornings I listen to the audio Bible at Biblegateway.com as I go through my morning routines. I’ve found that my mind doesn’t wander if my hands are busy.

Imagination and Bible Study

How does my early daydreaming relate to Bible study? Imagining what it would be like to have been biblical characters in their situations has brought the Bible to life for me and those I teach. God will use your bent to help you connect with Him too.

When we enjoy our time with the Lord we look forward to it. Don’t be afraid to try different times of day and formats. God made you unique. Give yourself a break and enjoy your time with Jesus.

Take delight in the Lord, and he will give you the desires of your heart” (Ps. 37:4 NIV).

How do you keep your time with God fresh?

Thanks for this, Debbie. I find the same thing about listening while my hands are busy. And this will be the fourth year that my husband and I have read through the Bible together. I love having that routine going in the background of whatever else I’m reading or studying. Plus, it forces us to be in the same space to make it happen!

Michele, how wonderful to share that with your husband! I’m glad to know I’m not the only one who likes to listen while my body moves.

I smiled the whole way through your post, Debbie. I completely agree – we all connect with God in our own way, and that’s OK. Better than OK! Believe it or not, I often use my time when I am running a long run to connect with God. It works better if I am running on a bike path, though. When I run on the road I have to watch out for traffic! 🙂

LOL! Yes, keep those eyes open and alert. Sometimes we forget God tells us to delight in Him. Isn’t that great?

    Hi Debbie,

“Our Creator didn’t knit a bunch of sock dolls from the same ball of yarn. He wove different personalities to reflect His glory and display His creativity. If no two fingerprints are the same, why would we think everyone connects with God the same way?” I love these words! What a freeing, grace-centered post. Thanks for sharing this perspective.

Wow, such fresh insight on connecting with God, Debbie. I love all the descriptions of women at different ages and stages…and their diversity in how they connect with God.

This. “If no two fingerprints are the same, why would we think everyone connects with God the same way? ” Yes, Amen!

Karen, I enjoyed hearing the varous ways these connected with God too. Thanks, friend.

Yes, he was, Rebecca! Glad to meet a fellow daydreamer.

Discussing what God is teaching me and showing me with others after the fact keeps it exciting and cements it with me. laurensparks.net

Lauren, I also enjoy discussing what God is teaching me. Great way to cement the lessons.
