4 Declarations of True Identity in Christ {Recharge Wednesday LINKUP}

Sometimes we forget who we are in Christ.

The enemy of our souls hopes we believe all the wrong “I am” declarations. Those negative statements we often say and repeat to ourselves that damage our true identity.

There’s no better time than in our present world and crisis, to remember what the Lord says about us and hold on to these truths with all our might.

So we need to remind our hearts of 4 powerful “I am” declarations to regain our true identity in Christ.

(1.) I am loved.

If you’re anything like me, you grew up questioning if people really loved you. And—gulp—wondering if God loves you.

Maybe these questions formed in various stages of our life. Or, the enemy uses our uncertainty of love to haunt us in the present. But the love of Christ is firm and certain.

To believe and know the truth about His love, write out and pray these scriptures:

  • Love lays down His life for us (John 15:13).
  • Perfect love drives out our fear (1 John 4:18).
  • Christ crowns us with love (Psalm 103:4).
  • God’s love stands firm forever (Psalm 89:2).

If you belong to Christ, repeat after me: I am loved. This is our true identity.

Love lays down His life for us (John 15:13). If you belong to Christ, repeat after me: 'I am loved.' This is our true identity. @FridayKaren #declaration Click To Tweet

(2.) I am chosen.

Please choose me pounded in my chest. Our physical education teacher picked two team captains for the softball game. Back and forth, each captain chose students as team members. Yet, no one chose me.

As an adult, I still carry the silent plea of hoping others choose me. But Jesus is the captain of His team. Christ always chooses me and you.

To believe and know the truth about how the Lord chose us, write out and pray these scriptures:

  • God chose us as His treasured possession (Psalm 50:15).
  • The Father chose us and appointed us to bear fruit in His name (John 15:16).
  • We belong to a “chosen race, a royal priesthood, a holy nation…a people for his own possession.” (1 Peter 2:9a).
  • God chose us before the foundations of the world to make us holy and blameless (Ephesians 1:4-5).

If you belong to Christ, repeat after me: I am chosen. This is our true identity.

God chose us as His treasured possession (Psalm 50:15). If you belong to Christ, repeat after me: 'I am chosen.' This is our true identity. @FridayKaren #Identity #IAM Click To Tweet

(3.) I am redeemed.

The Blue Letter Bible online gives the Hebrew word for redeemed as qanah. Biblical usage includes: “to get, acquire, to buy, obtain, purchase and recover.”

Redeemable things in the Bible included land and property and sometimes people. And the Redeemer recovered us from the clutches of the enemy, sin, and eternal death. Because He paid for our sins with His own blood.

To believe and know the truth about redemption, write out and pray these scriptures:

  • Christ redeems us by His blood and forgives our sins by God’s grace (Ephesians 1:7).
  • Christ became a curse for us to redeem us from the curse of the law (Galatians 3:13).
  • We put our hope in the Lord, with Him is full redemption (Psalm 130:7).
  • The Lord redeemed us from the hand of our adversary (Psalm 107:2).

If you belong to Christ, repeat after me: I am redeemed. This is our true identity.

Christ redeems us by His blood and forgives our sins by God’s grace (Ephesians 1:7). If you belong to Christ, repeat after me: 'I am redeemed.' This is our true identity. @FridayKaren #IAM Click To Tweet

(4.) I am free.

Our two beloved dogs sleep in crates at night with latched doors. So after the last outside potty trip, it’s time to go inside their respective crates. Then, as morning dawns, they are ready for freedoom…to romp about freely.

Often, we take our spiritual freedom for granted. Or, we fail to maintain our freedom in Christ. We may live according to the flesh and not the spirit. Perhaps our soul’s chained to an addiction. Maybe we refuse to forgive, and the bitterness imprisons us. Or, we are consumed right now with fear, worry, and a lack of peace.

In Christ, we can break free from every form of bondage.

To believe and know the truth about freedom, write out and pray these scriptures:

  • The Son sets us free (John 8:26).
  • Christ sets us free from sin for eternal life and holiness (Romans 6:22).
  • For freedom Christ set us free…guard against going back to slavery (Galatians 5:1).
  • God’s precepts help us walk in freedom (Psalm 119:45).

If you belong to Christ, repeat after me: I am free. This is our true identity.

Real freedom is when the Son sets us free (John 8:26). If you belong to Christ, repeat after me: 'I am free.' This is our true identity. @FridayKaren #freedom Click To Tweet

What a change to our perspective if we kept these things in mind all the time!

      April 8, 2020 at 8:30 am

Thanks, Barbara. Sometimes we study the “I AM” statements of Jesus, which are so powerful and necessary to dissect. But we often forget about our own “I am” statements because of who Jesus is!

Barbara is loved, chosen, redeemed and free!

  2. Bev @ Walking Well With God says

    Karen,
Beautiful truth for us to dwell on as we wait out this season. When we are isolated, the enemy prowls about and he wants to tempt us to take the bait of his lies. All the more reason to read and dwell on His truth! I will be reading through these verses again!
    Blessings and be well…
    Bev xx

Bev, I must stay intentional to know my true identity in Christ to keep those lies and bait from the enemy at bay.

Bev is loved, chosen, forgiven, and free!

  3. Michele Morin says

These are powerful affirmations, and we need to come back to foundational truth like this in days of uncertainty. I have a feeling that many are struggling with identity issues, having been separated from many of the things we use to attach meaning to our days.
    Blessings to you!

    • Karen Friday says

      April 8, 2020 at 8:35 am

I think you are correct in that assessment, Michele. We tend to find our identity in all sorts of things and people. But when those are taken away, we search for the truth of who we are and were all along.

Michele is loved, chosen, forgiven, and free!

Karen, these are wonderful truths to build our identity on. I especially liked the “chosen” list. Happy Easter, dear friend.

Thank you, Debbie. God chose you as His treasured possession.
