Lord, Help My Countenance!

October 28, 2020 by Bethany McIlrath

If you're new here, you may want to subscribe to my RSS feed. Thanks for visiting!

Sometimes all our favorite coping mechanisms fail us.

Sometimes clearing our heads just makes the clutter in our hearts stand out more.

Sometimes it’s not a matter of unbelief or challenging circumstances.

Call it hormones. Label it mood. The fact is, sometimes despite what we believe, we just aren’t “feeling” it.

While there are many ways to help get the truth from our heads to our hearts, I’ve found sometimes hearts are just tired. We get worn out. Weariness settles in.

As with physical collapse, trying to get up on our own when we’re worn down emotionally is ineffective.

But God.

“Hope in God, for I shall yet praise Him,
The help of my countenance and my God.”

– Psalm 42:11 NASB

He is the help of the very thing within us that crashes at times.

He is able when we are not.

In His abundant grace, God who is our Hope also gives us hope. When we’re wearied, our personal, loving God extends a hand to lift our heavy heads (Psalm 3:3.)

“But you, LORD, are a shield around me, my glory, the One who lifts my head high.”

– Psalm 3:3

God doesn’t just shield us, He is the shield around us. He is our glory. He is both the reason we lift our heads and the lifter of our heads. As Paul says in 1 Corinthians 15:28:

“When he has done this, then the Son himself will be made subject to him who put everything under him, so that God may be all in all.”

When you’re down and can’t seem to get up, it’s good to know that some feelings are just feelings and the God who sets all in motion ensures they too will pass without wrecking our walk with Him. Yes, we shall yet praise Him.

He’ll help us to do so.

Isn’t that right there already a cause for praise?

I never met a feeling that wouldn’t become a god if I let it.
Thank you, Bethany, for this uplifting post.

So true. Sometimes we have to do right even when we don’t feel right and let the feelings come when they come. I’m thankful for God’s grace.

Beautifully said, Bethany. Loved the statements in the intro and the way you unpacked this entire article. This! “God doesn’t just shield us, He is the shield around us. He is our glory. He is both the reason we lift our heads and the lifter of our heads.”

Bethany, thank you for this. It’s so good. I’ve been writing and speaking about self-care a lot lately. I know many individuals and families are hurting, stressed, and crashing hard. For many people, I know, sleep is becoming more difficult, and rest is needed.

Your line, “He is able when we are not,” stuck with me this morning. While self-care is important and needed, ultimately, it is God who pulls us through. Thank you for this reminder, and very well said!

Patricia, thank you for hosting another amazing link-up!

Thank you, Jed! Glad to see you here. Thanks for letting me know that line stuck with you, it’s one I hold onto personally, too! Like you said, self care is important, but sometimes we just can’t. So grateful God can!

Thank you, Bethany, so very encouraging. I loved “In His abundant grace, God who is our Hope also gives us hope.” Psalm 42 is a go to for me when I feel burdened. It’s so true, sometimes we just feel like our hearts are too weary. “But God”, He will be the strength and renewal we need.

Such a great Psalm! Thanks for joining in here, Donna!
