“He loves me, he loves me not.” I plucked the white daisy petals, deciding the outcome of my childhood crush. A hope in love.

Years later during a Sunday church service, daisies on my dress stirred those memories as I waited for my pastor-husband Mike to call me to the platform. He had asked me to share the long journey of praying for my father to come to Christ. First we watched the Billy Graham video “Hope for America—a Message of the Cross.”

Hope in Love

As I waited for my cue, the white-and-yellow daisies on a background of black seemed to blossom on my dress. The Lord put in my heart an image of plucking flower petals and suggested the daisies that represented a young girl’s hope—hope for love—still covey a message of hope…hope found in the kind of love that goes to the cross.

As a young girl, I longed for love—especially from a father.

Starting in childhood we form beliefs about love. Beliefs about God often shape what we think about love. In The Knowledge of the Holy, A.W. Tozer writes, “What comes into our minds when we think about God is the most important thing about us.”

What comes into our minds when we think about God is the most important thing about us. ~ A.W. Tozer @karenfriday #rechargewednesday
Click To Tweet

There may be unbelief in God’s existence. We may believe there is a God but form wrong thoughts about Him.

God is a cosmic cop watching our every move, ready to bust us for every wrong turn and slap us with justice.

God is a disciplinary father-figure punishing us for poor choices with stern consequences.

God is like our earthly father who abandoned us physically or emotionally—perhaps both. We cannot count on him.

You see, abandonment confused my notions on love. And I wasn’t sure what I thought about God. When my dad came back, I spent every other weekend with him. A self-proclaimed atheist, he often said, “People think there is a God, but there isn’t.”

But my mother introduced me to truths about God, and we attended a small-town church in Virginia. At sixteen, when I came to Christ, I started praying for my father to not only believe in God but to accept Christ as Lord.

Though I prayed fervently, I still found it hard to visualize my father coming to Christ. He seemed so hard-hearted…so unreachable.

God So Loved

Sill, I knew Scripture confirmed “Everyone who calls on the name of the Lord will be saved” (Romans 10:13 NLT). And I knew “For God so loved the world, that he gave his only Son, that whoever believes in him should not perish but have eternal life” (John 3:16 ESV).

But, when I prayed, inserting my father’s full name into these Scriptures, they became promises. Believable promises opening my faith eyes. “Now faith is confidence in what we hope for and assurance about what we do not see.” (Hebrews 11:1 NIV).

Finally, sixteen years later, my father accepted the message of the cross. He realized God existed—a God who loved him and wanted him.

Hope in God’s Love

My father passed away five days before Christmas. The holidays that year were bittersweet. My family would not be going to his home for our traditional Christmas night Mexican feast.

A lover of spicy food, he started the tradition knowing that by Christmas night, his kids and grandchildren were ready for a change from the usual holiday foods. Now, my father celebrated with a his own feast in heaven. A sweet image.

God is not the earthly pictures we paint. But, there is a God. He is love. Love originated with Him and from Him. He loves us.

God is not the earthly pictures we paint. But, there is a God. He is love. Love originated with Him and from Him. He loves us. @KarenFriday #rechargewednesday
Click To Tweet

And His love is not based on some whimsical hope of the last flower petal landing on “He loves me.”

Instead, there’s a message forever ingrained on my heart. The hope of true love is found in the cross.

Plucking petals from a flower, we can never say about God, “He loves me not.” It is always, “He loves me, He loves me. Jesus loves me, God, You love me, You love me, You love me, You love me!”

And He loves you!

“I really need a friend.”

Have you ever thought you could really use a friend? Maybe you prayed for the Lord to send you a friend in a new city, job, group or church.

Since our family spent over thirty-five years in full-time church ministry and lived in different towns and states, friendship became somewhat of a lifeline. So I usually prayed for at least one friend at each new place.

Have you ever prayed that the Lord would send you a friend?

Early in our marriage, we moved to a small farm town in a new state. Our daughter was only eighteen months old at the time.

Gracious ladies from the church brought us dinner for a few nights and I unpacked boxes while our daughter napped during the day.

Still, I’ll never forget the Sunday when a young woman approached me after a service. “Do you need anything? Let me know if you need anything.” Her sentiments seemed honest and heartfelt.

I politely thanked her and continued with: No, we are fine.

But as I started to walk away, I felt the Lord nudging me to turn back around and tell her I needed a friend. With the Lord helping me to be brave, I walked toward her: I thought of something I need, I really need a friend.

You know what? We formed a wonderful friendship and kept in touch when my family moved again. It was a God-thing.

Created for Friendship

The enemy wants us to believe the lie that we are “fine” without friends. Or, that you and your family have each other and you don’t need friends in your community.

The enemy wants us to believe the lie that we are “fine” without friends. Or, that you and your family have each other and you don’t need friends in your community. @FridayKaren #friendship
Click To Tweet

But it’s not true. God created us for relationship and community. First, the Lord desires that we are in relationship with him. Have you found a friend in Jesus?

Next, God intended for us to be in relationship with people. This includes family and friends.

It’s a good thing for a husband and wife to be friends—even best friends. Yet, the Lord never intended it to stop there. Instead, God wants women to make connections with other women and men with other men.

Praying for a Friend

Perhaps it never occurred to you to pray for friends. But we need friends as much as our kids have this need. Here are some examples of when to pray for friendships.

1. When you move to a new neighborhood.

2. Your family moves to a new town.

3. If you go back into the workforce or start a new job.

4. If you attend a new church.

5. You homeschool your children.

6. When you work from home.

7. If you are in ministry or missions.

8. A friend moves away or exits your life.

This list is not exhaustive, but gives you some ideas of when to pray for friends.

Listen to your heart, it will know when you need a good friend.

Specific Prayers When You Need a Friend

Here are a few specific prayers.

Lord, thank you that you have called me friend (John 15:15). Help me to cherish my relationship with you above all others. Please send me a friend in our new town who is in relationship with you so we can mutually encourage and build each other up. In the name of Jesus. Amen.

Heavenly Father, let your light shine through me and become a friend to a woman who desperately needs one. In the name of Jesus. Amen.

God, you created us to do life together, you created friendship. Direct my steps to the friends you want in my life. I desire to sharpen someone else as they sharpen me (Proverbs 27:17).

Lord, your word describes friendship as kind, honest, loving, forgiving, and how the “righteous choose their friends carefully” (Proverbs 12:26). Give me the desire and wisdom to strive for this kind of friendship, wherever I am. In the name of Jesus. Amen.

Reflect on if you need to pray for a friend in an area of your life or if you need to pray to be that friend to someone.

Looking at others around me, I find it easy to assume they’re God-glorifying because of what great people they are. Sometimes I want to ask, “what’s your secret?” I don’t feel like I’m good at glorifying God.

I mean to praise the Lord, but I end up assessing what could be better instead.

I wish I spoke to God’s glory all the time, but often I say things that just don’t need to be said.

The list goes on. And on.

When it comes down to it, I want to share God’s glory. But I fail, a lot.

There is good news for me, though (and the people God’s placed in my life.) God’s glory doesn’t depend on my delivery, my evidence, or my performance.

God’s glory doesn’t depend on my delivery, my evidence, or my performance. @BethanyMcIlrath
Click To Tweet

I’m not lacking any special secret power needed to share about Jesus. And neither are you.

Paul shared the secret long ago.

“This is the secret: Christ lives in you. This gives you assurance of sharing his glory.” –Colossians 1:27

Here’s what Christ living in you means for sharing His glory:

“You are controlled by the Spirit if you have the Spirit of God living in you.” –Romans 8:9

“The Lord—who is the Spirit—makes us more and more like him as we are changed into his glorious image.” –2 Corinthians 3:18

“The Holy Spirit produces this kind of fruit in our lives: love, joy, peace, patience, kindness, goodness, faithfulness, gentleness, and self-control.” –Galatians 5:22-23

“God works in different ways, but it is the same God who does the work in all of us.” –1 Corinthians 12:6

More than any tactic, personality, or specific testimony, what we need to share God’s glory is God living in us.

The Secret to Glorifying God: More than any tactic, personality, or specific testimony, what we need to share God's glory is God living in us. @bethanymcilrath
Click To Tweet

If we belong to Him through faith in Christ, then God says: “The Spirit himself testifies with our spirit that we are God’s children.” –Romans 8:16

The pressure’s off. God’s got His glory covered.

My prayer is that we’ll make the assurance of sharing His glory the worst-kept secret ever.

My competitive side was getting the better of me. As far as we were into the game, it was clear I wasn’t going to win. I’d tried, strategizing my way through, but there was no doubt who would have the victory (not me.)

The temptation? To pick up the whole stinking board game and shake it. Maybe toss it. Maybe stomp on it, as I’d seen little kids I babysat do.

On that day, I was feeling like a sore loser.

That’s what Satan probably feels like every day.

Sometimes I need reminding of this, and maybe you do too.

Satan knows he is going to lose.

Victory, for all eternity, belongs to Jesus. He’s already won it. Fate is secure. Back in the garden when God pronounced His curses, Satan knew he would be the loser.

Still, he wages war. Sore loser that he is, Satan does what he can to stack the playing field so we doubt the outcome. He shakes up the board, so all the pieces look like they’re out of place and we can’t make sense of anything.

Like a bitter child about to be punished, he gets in whatever jabs he can anyway.

Satan likes to go down swinging.

That’s why faith is still a fight, even though we know who is going to win in the end.

Satan likes to go down swinging. That’s why faith is still a fight, even though we know who is going to win in the end.
Click To Tweet

When suffering and sorrow make fear and desperation seem credible,

Remember:

The end is near

Death will die

Satan will be bound

Christ has overcome the world

There is no condemnation for those who are Christ’s

God gives us the victory through Jesus

This battle of faith isn’t about winning because it’s already been won. Instead, it’s about persisting.

The believer’s rallying cry is simply keep on.

Though that sore loser thrashes and trash talks and threatens that he isn’t playing, we know he’s missed the whole point of the game anyway. We’re not to miss it, too.

“Therefore, my dear brothers and sisters, stand firm. Let nothing move you. Always give yourselves fully to the work of the Lord, because you know that your labor in the Lord is not in vain.” –1 Corinthians 15:58

Continuing to do the next thing, to play by God’s rules, to live faithfully to the finish line with our eyes on the prize- is not in vain.

Satan’s a sore loser, but He will lose!

“Who is it that overcomes the world? Only the one who believes that Jesus is the Son of God.” -1 John 5:5

Keep fighting the good fight of faith!

The sins of some are obvious, reaching the place of judgment ahead of them; the sins of others trail behind them. –1 Timothy 5:24

Paul made this small but vivid remark at the end of a letter to his younger friend, Timothy. The wisdom has stuck in my mind.

Sin on the Flashing Sign

There are some obvious sins. The kind with far-reaching, immediately obvious consequences. These are sins that run on ahead of us. They holler on up ahead to our kids “don’t copy Mom in this!” and warn off our friends “you know how she is.”

We don’t have to look back to see their havoc; instead we have to ask for grace and offer apologies before anyone even gets a word in. Obvious sins mark our paths like flashing signs on the highway. Very few overlook them, including us.

Example: If you knew me before or around the time I became Christ’s, you know I loved to cheat. Any game. Any contest, any debate. It was never a surprise when friends weren’t interested in playing with me- my obvious sin proceeded me, turning away prospects for fun because I had a reputation.

Sin on the Mile Markers

But then there are other sins, the sort Paul says “trail behind” us. We pass on by these signs like mile markers along the road, taking them for granted as “just the way we are.” We may glance at them as helpful hints, but we rarely realize their impact until we’ve got a trail of them behind us.

These are the kinds of sins we only recognize when the distance is crossed and the damage is done. They are subtle, normalized, and even seem harmless.

Example: Early in our marriage, I frequently commented on my husband’s prayers. It never occurred to me I may be sinning by commentary. But, my comments were quiet criticisms and subtle opinions. Looking back, I can see that now and understand why for a time his prayers became formal and curt. That regular sin slowly put miles between us without my seeing it.

Making Up The Mileage

Like it or not, we’re going to live with sins that flash glaringly before us- and sins that take us by surprise when we see how they’ve subtly created consequences.

Thanks be to God whose grace is sufficient to make up for the sins that go before us and behind us.
Click To Tweet

As we navigate life with our obvious baggage and the stuff we drag behind us, we are given this charge alongside Timothy:

“But you, man of God, flee from all this, and pursue righteousness, godliness, faith, love, endurance and gentleness. Fight the good fight of the faith. Take hold of the eternal life to which you were called.” –1 Timothy 6:11-12

Flee the sin

Turn toward God

Press on the pedal

Hold that steering wheel and drive in line with His directions

Someday, the flashing lights will be out of sight. Then, as Ruth Bell Graham’s gravestone announces: “End of construction- thank you for your patience.”

Someday, the mile markers trailing behind will be left in the dust as we finally arrive, perfected in Christ.

Until then, we press on after our Lord and trust that He can make good out of our meandering miles.

Ever so carefully. We stacked the pieces with fingers crossed.

The tower stood tall, having occupied me, a teenage helper, and several nursery kiddos for most of our time together.

All it took was one wide-eyed, deviously grinning four-year-old. He slipped through our grasp, and, with one swift kick, it all came tumbling down.

Months. It took months to build those set pieces. Weeks and weeks with entire evenings dedicated to planning, painting, and assembling before the big performances. Most of us in the cast and crew were over the moon with excitement and a sense of accomplishment.

Then came “strike.” That’s what demolition day was called in my theatre group.

In a matter of hours, all that work was undone.

Prayer and Google lined the road God paved. With limited time, we’d carefully and nervously pieced together our plans. It was only months before that someone else’s plans determined our original expectations wouldn’t come to fruition.

So, we were trying again. The job was accepted. Paperwork signed. Moving truck loaded and driven 1000+ miles. I had the signed lease in my hand.

She had a different, unsigned lease in hers, and a manipulative smile as she demanded more money than we could pay. Homeless in a new state, all our plans were in shambles. Again.

The speaker’s topic at the college event was friendship. She told her listeners about the friendships she’d had over the years. Many were rich, warm, and personal. But in time, some ended. Friends she’d spent her days with, even lived with, were now a part of the past.

As a student just beginning to think about graduation and next steps, I hadn’t thought about that. Many friendships are for seasons. Today, I only keep in touch with a handful of the multitude of friends I talked to all the time back then.

Realizing how easily and quickly friendships grow apart after so long growing together seemed earth-shattering at the time.

Tedious stacks, love-labored projects, prayed-over plans, pined-over friendships. Things we build into are dismantled more easily than we think.

Fragility in this world can make us feel unstable. Change can feel like sinking sand. But there is joy, hope, and confidence for those whose foundation is Christ.
Click To Tweet

Christ Himself is the chief cornerstone (Ephesians 2:20)

When He is our foundation, we build on solid rock (Matthew 7:24)

God is our rock, refuge, and fortress; He will not be moved (Psalm 62:6)

The believer’s foundation in Christ is firm (2 Timothy 2:19)

Even if struck down, believers are not destroyed (2 Corinthians 4:9)

There is no dismantling salvation. No one can shatter grace. No force or blow or wandering can separate Christ from those who belong to Him.

So, though our work caves, though plans sway, though friendships fade, though expectations give away, we know that our foundation is sure.

Because Christ is building us, we can keep building with confidence.
Click To Tweet

Dr. Herbert C. Jackson was a 20th-century American missionary who later became a seminary professor, publishing several articles for journals about theology in Christian missions, as well as mission strategies. I came across a story Jackson told his seminary students about something that happened during his first assignment as a young missionary.

The car Jackson was assigned was old and would not start without a push. After thinking about the situation, Jackson devised a plan. He decided to go to a school near his home and ask permission to get some children out of class to help him push his car off. He then decided to either always park on a hill, or leave the engine running every time he had to park somewhere. For two years, Jackson used the same tactics any time he needed to use his car.

After two years, his family had to leave the station, and a new missionary arrived to take Jackson’s job.

The old car would be the new missionary’s means of transportation as well, so Jackson started to explain the issue to his replacement. As Jackson spoke, the young minister lifted the hood of the car and proceeded to look inside. Before Jackson finished explaining his strategy to get the car to start, the new missionary interrupted him:

“Why, Dr. Jackson, I believe the only trouble is this loose cable,” said the young man.

He proceeded to twist the cable, got in the car and turned the key. To Jackson’s surprise, the engine started right away.

The article continues: “For two years, needless trouble had become routine. The power was there all the time. Only a loose connection kept Jackson from putting that power to work.”

I am currently reading a book by R.A. Torrey titled “The Holy Spirit – Who He Is and What He Does.” A classic in Christian literature, the book is a collection of Torrey’s sermons shared by the pastor-turned-evangelist during his worldwide crusades between 1902 and 1912. The book is perhaps one of the most insightful, challenging manuscripts on the subject.

As I read the story about Jackson’s car experience, I could not help but think about one of the principles Torrey stresses out throughout his book: the omnipotent power of God. Throughout the book, Torrey teaches that God longs to make His infinite wisdom, direction, and power available to all believers who seek an intimate relationship with Him through prayer and the study of scriptures.

God longs to make his infinite wisdom, direction, and power available to all believers who seek an intimate relationship with Him through prayer and the study of scriptures. #HolySpirit #MondayMotivation @AJC
Click To Tweet

I was praying with a young lady earlier this week, and, as I started interceding for something she asked me to pray for, I felt a nudge in my spirit to pray for someone else as well. In doing so, my prayer extended for several minutes. I could feel her fidgeting as the prayer went on longer than she anticipated. After I finished, she looked at me and said: “I simply can’t pray for that long. I feel anxious, ready to move on.”

I appreciate her honesty. I believe that this is a common issue and one that is becoming increasingly rampant in the church, as people make little time for God in their daily lives.

The problem is that God is not a sort of genie that we call upon with a list of our three wishes every morning. Instead, God is in the business of developing a relationship with His creation. And unless his children make time to, as the psalmist said: “Be still and know” that He is God, they will never think to look under the hood and connect the wire that brings the power needed to accomplish His purposes for their lives.

The problem is that God is not a sort of genie that we call upon with a list of our three wishes every morning. Instead, God is in the business of developing a relationship with His creation. @AJC #MondayMotivation
Click To Tweet

And so, we find churches filled with activities, but empty of power; preaching filled with emotions, but lacking direction and conviction; and believers that don’t miss one service or mass, but fidget under the preacher’s voice.

Could it be that we lack peace, purpose, direction and power, only because we are living on our own strength, and, like young Jackson, failing to connect the wire that ignites the power of God in our lives??

Circles highlight the things I didn’t get to, but need to. Scribbles hide the things that aren’t getting done anytime soon. Dashes check off what I’ve done- and sometimes they cover the whole square for each day. Life is full of little things right now, but:

Every little thing adds up and sometimes the day just feels overwhelming.

Every little thing adds up and sometimes the day just feels overwhelming. @BethanyMcIlrath
Click To Tweet

You too?

Here’s some hope from the only One who can take it all:

Today Isn’t Too Much

“Now what I am commanding you today is not too difficult for you or beyond your reach.”

–Deuteronomy 30:11

This is a verse I recite regularly, a truth we all need when it feels like everything is too much and too hard. The only things we really need to do are feasible. The only checks on our to-do list of eternal importance are attainable.

What is it the Lord has commanded today? To “turn to the LORD your God with all your heart and soul.” That’s our whole necessary to-do list, and it’s not too much.

By the grace of God, it takes one moment of surrender to define the rest of our day. Just a simple priority on HIM above all else makes living a worthwhile day today right within reach.

By the grace of God, it takes one moment of surrender to define the rest of our day @BethanyMcIlrath
Click To Tweet

Today Won’t be Too Little

“Teach us to number our days, that we may gain a heart of wisdom.” –Psalm 90:12

In believing that the Lord works all things together for good, we also believe that God does not waste (Romans 8:28.) Numbering our days means adopting that same perspective. It means recognizing that each day, no matter how frustrating or tedious, has value according to the Lord…so today isn’t just another day. It’s a day fresh with God’s mercies and purposes.

Today is Enough

“But seek first his kingdom and his righteousness, and all these things will be given to you as well. Therefore do not worry about tomorrow, for tomorrow will worry about itself. Each day has enough trouble of its own.” Matthew 6:33-34

If today has enough trouble of its own, then that means what’s at hand is enough to fill our whole capacity of concern. But read the verse that comes first, before that blessed “therefore.”

Seek ye first. Friends, if we are seeking Him first then despite the fact that today will have its troubles, we don’t have to worry at all. Because the troubles of today aren’t keeping us from seeking Him.

As I understand it, my shorthand for these verses is:

Enough trouble for today means enough reasons to seek and rely on God today.

Enough trouble for today means enough reasons to seek and rely on God today. @BethanyMcIlrath
Click To Tweet

We don’t need extra reasons. What He’s asked for and will provide today will be sufficient for our needs.

No need to get ahead on your to-do list. No rush to fit everything in. There will be time if there needs to be, because everything has its time and season in the Lord’s order.

What verses give you a fresh perspective when you are overwhelmed?

In Egypt, it all started with Atum, the first god to exist. Atum coughed and spat out Shu, the god of the air, and Tefnut, the goodness of moisture. Following were countless gods and centennial dynasties of Egyptian pharaohs, who were (of course) also gods.

And Then there was Rome.

The first nation to persecute Christians worshipped Jupiter, Neptune, Venus and others. Her emperors were also gods and would not consent the exclusivity of what they called “this new cult,” which spread throughout the region and beyond, claiming that there was One, Holy God, His Name was Yahweh and His Son, Yeshua Hamashiach. Yahweh’s very law made it clear: there was no room for other gods amongst His people. Because of that, His Name has been persecuted throughout the centuries.

Fast forward to the 21st century.

Worship pluralism is greater today than it’s ever been. We may not bow before them, offer sacrifices or worship in their temples. But we worship them, regardless.

Their names? Kylie Jenner, Social Media, Football, My Retirement Portfolio, BMW, just to name a few.

There is also the fact that we have also positioned ourselves as gods, sacrificing our babies in the name of self.

“It’s my body,” they say…

“And I shall worship it,” they should add.

“I am the LORD your God, who brought you out of the land of Egypt, out of the house of slavery. You shall have no other gods before Me.” Exodus 20:3

We have replaced the carved statues with the objects of our affection. Whether they are a person, our sports team or our own desires, as a society, we have taken God out of His ranking as first in our lives and now we worship Him when it’s convenient and pleasant. We have time for Facebook, but we don’t have time for His Word. We know who dates who in Hollywood, but we turn a blind eye to the veiled infiltration of immorality in our school system. As a nation, we accept. As Christians, we often silence. In the meantime, God’s indignation grows bigger each day. Not just with the nations, their presidents and leaders, but also with His people. His CHOSEN people.

So what are we, Christians to do?

“After he has gathered his own flock, he walks ahead of them, and they follow him because they know his voice.” John 10:4 (NLT)

We can’t know His voice if we don’t make spending time with Him a priority.

It’s as simple as that.

I cannot expect to have a good marriage if my husband becomes one of the last items on my busy agenda…

Parents and grandparents cannot expect to have a good relationship with adult children if they did not have time for them while they were young…

A house does not clean itself.

We must make time with God a priority.

For several years, before I got married, my time to commune with God was in the evenings, before I went to bed. But in the past 20 tears, I have chosen to have my quiet time in the morning, before I start my daily activities. Several years ago, we turned a “junk” closet under our stairs into a prayer room. That’s my sacred meeting place.

You may not need to go into a closet. For many years, my “closet” was my car, during my commute hours in Atlanta traffic. For you, it may be a walk in the park. That’s one of my favorite places as well. The point is not where, but what. Our lives as so busy, that we can easily miss God’s voice. He speaks. All.the.time! But are we listening? The reason many of us end up “slipping” into a life of spiritual complacency is that we are not listening to God.

As His children, we really should not need a pastor or a friend to tell us how to live. We should be able to hear and simply obey.
Click To Tweet

Truthfully, before we can make a difference in our country, in our world, we need to allow God to change US. We need to be still for long enough to allow Him to hear His directions.

More than service, more than giving, more than anything, God wants to spend time with you. It is in the quietness of your heart that He speaks. In the stillness of your soul that He guides your steps.

And as He takes His place in your life as first, intimate and essential, Yahweh reigns. His will prevails. His ways win. He remains the One and only God in your life.
Click To Tweet
