Despite spending more per person on healthcare than any other country in the world, two-out-of-three American adults are overweight, obese and/or suffer from a chronic disease.

According to Mayo Clinic, 70 percent of all Americans are on at least one prescription drug, and more than half are taking four or more prescriptions.

In this week’s episode, I talk to a husband and wife duo with a beautiful story of redemption and renewed purpose after addiction, divorce and brokenness. 

Robby and Mia Graham were both delivered from addiction through their relationship with Jesus. They met and fell in love while in AA.

A Second Chance

After miraculously surviving a heart attack at 58, Robby was able to reverse his heart disease by eating a plant-based diet. After this revelation, which healed his body, and with leading from the Holy Spirit, he and Mia opened Revelations Cafe – a faith-based, plant-based café in their hometown of Tampa – with the goal of helping people find healing to their bodies and spirits.

Soon, doctors were even prescribing the Café’s meal plans as a means to lower their patients’ cholesterol levels.

Their remarkable story of healing, faith, and food is shared in a new documentary, Revelations Café: Food for the Soul – available now.

Job is the first of the poetic books in the Hebrew Bible and is believed to be the first written book of Scriptures. It tells the astounding story of a righteous man who was tested extensively and did not lose faith in God. It is a gripping story of loss and prosperity and offers a vast theological treatise about enduring faith and God’s sovereignty.

Even though some believe the book’s story to be an allegory, the prophet Ezekiel and the apostle James in the New Testament mention Job as a historical figure.

The very first chapter of the book sets the stage.

Job is a rich and blessed man who loves God with all his heart and obeys his commandments. The scene changes to a conversation between God and Satan, where the fallen angel claims that Job only trusted God because he was wealthy and prosperous.

And thus, Job’s trials began. For the following 42 chapters, we witness Job tested in every way. He lost all his children and all his possessions. His friends accused him. Painful sores covered his body, and his wife told him to curse God and die.

Through it all, Job’s response tells the reader that he was convinced of two absolutes: his innocence and God’s sovereignty. Even though he felt overwhelmingly depressed, he remained faithful.

While many tried to convince Job that God had abandoned him, his humility and trust in God’s unchanging faithfulness and limitless might paved the way to God’s final response: God rebuked his friends, and the drama ended with Job’s wealth, health, and happiness restored.

Is God still good, even when the worse happens?

The question has inevitably pierced the hearts of believers tested by prolonged trials through the ages, and the answer, I believe, paves the way to measure the steadfastness of one’s faith.

Earlier in February, I talked to podcaster and Bible teacher Misty Phillip about her Bible study “The Struggle is Real, but So is God.”

During our conversation, Phillip recounted her family’s many trials, including losing her baby boy, stillborn after years of infertility and miscarriages. There were years of overwhelming loss and hardships as Phillip and her husband cared for his parents with terminal brain tumors and the ongoing care of a special needs son.

As Phillip described the funeral of their stillborn baby, a solemn moment gripped my heart: The family held hands to say goodbye to their son while singing Matt Redman’s song, “Blessed Be Your Name.” Friends and family who had come to minister to the grieving family left the funeral encouraged by their steadfast courage and faith.

Trials brought them closer to God

This trial and many others brought the Phillips closer to God. Instead of cursing their maker, they chose to believe in his faithfulness and purpose in the valleys. And today, as she looks back, Phillip can testify how her response to life’s tragedies paved the way to minister to others through her growing ministry and Bible study.

I can relate. Misty and I have talked about how upside-down biblical faith can be. But when one understands that God does not allow anything to happen to his children that cannot work together for their eternal good and his glory, faith has lingering effects in one’s heart.

Like Job, we can only become overcomers if we press on. And like him, we cannot claim to have strong faith until it’s tested and tried by fire, and the measured heat purifies our hearts as God purposefully designed.

I remember the day as if it were yesterday.

I was 9 years old when my parents called my brother and me to our living room and asked us to sit down. By the look on their faces, I knew we were in trouble or something terrible had happened.

Their voices were low, their words measured. Carefully, they told us a long story about my mom’s love for a baby abandoned at her aunt’s house. Mom was only 15 years old when she met the 9-month-old baby girl. Over the next several years, she fell in love with the petit blond, blue-eyed little toddler, and a strong bond began.

In her early 20s, my mom promised the young girl that when she got married, she would adopt her. And so, when my dad proposed, her only condition was that he agreed to adopt my sister.

And so it happened. After a short honeymoon in Rio de Janeiro, Mom and Dad returned home to their beloved 8-year-old new daughter.

That is the beautiful adoption story of my oldest sister.

My little brother and I were surprised to find out that Ana was adopted, but my parents’ concerns about our reaction were unwarranted. Our oldest sister was, well, our beloved sister. Period. Nothing would ever change that.

Through the years, God has put people with incredible adoption stories in my life. Not only have I witnessed my sister’s life flourish, but several of my friends have adopted children, and it has been a blessing to witness their stories unfold.

For people of the Christian faith, we also understand adoption from a spiritual perspective. The Bible contains many passages portraying our relationship to God as adopted children. Perhaps the most known is found in the eighth chapter of the Apostle Paul’s letter to the Roman church:

“For those who are led by the Spirit of God are the children of God. The Spirit you received does not make you slaves so that you live in fear again; rather, the Spirit you received brought about your adoption to sonship.”

Indeed, adoption started in God’s heart. And just as it changed our eternal condition as believers, earthly adoptions change the lives of millions of children who would otherwise remain in orphanages without hope for a secure future.

I recently talked to Alex and Stephen Kendrick of Kendrick Productions about “Lifemark,” their first movie based on a true story. The film, produced in partnership with actor and evangelist Kirk Cameron and Phantom events, tells the story of David, an 18-year-old whose life turns upside down when his birth mother unexpectedly contacts him. To David’s surprise, she expresses the desire to meet the son she gave up for adoption when she was a teenager.

The Journey

With the encouragement and support of his adoptive parents, David chooses to meet his birth mother, and a journey starts, leading him to discover the astounding truth about his past.

During our interview, the Kendrick brothers described the incredible impact the movie has caused, including testimonies of young women who were contemplating abortion and chose to give birth to their babies after watching David’s true story.

But “Lifemark” goes beyond a “pro-birth” message. Rather, it highlights the preciousness of life in general, as the birth mother’s choice shaped many people’s lives. The young teenager’s decision to give birth to David gave him a chance to have an incredible life and a loving family. It also blessed countless people touched by the young man’s outstanding and caring character, including, eventually, his birth mother.

According to a survey performed by the website Statista.com between Oct. 25 and Nov. 2, 2022, the top 5 New Year’s resolutions for 2023 have not changed from the year before: Exercising more is No. 1, followed by eating healthier, losing weight, saving more money and spending more time with family and friends.

Certain elements are undoubtedly crucial to accomplish goals: Perseverance, self-control, and determination are at the top of the list. Likewise, challenging our self-imposed limitations is essential to reaching any objective.

But another essential characteristic is at the heart of every success: establishing and maintaining healthy boundaries.

Think about it — a perfectly good practice can become harmful without boundaries. Likewise, relationships that were once joyful can turn unbearably toxic without them.

If we were to perform a survey, I am confident we would be surprised at how many people reach the end of a year with a negative emotional balance regarding certain relationships. It could be a struggling marriage, an estranged child, or a friendship that saps our energy instead of filling our hearts with joy.

Regardless, instead of pushing through into another year feeling hopeless and defeated, it would do us good to inventory the health of our relationships. As we do, we may conclude that certain people continually hurt us because we have yet to establish healthy boundaries.

During our conversation, we discussed how common it is for Christians to have difficulty establishing boundaries and saying goodbye when a relationship becomes unbearably toxic, and the other person refuses to change their behavior.

It’s certainly not unusual for well-intended believers to find themselves in emotionally abusive relationships because they are afraid that establishing boundaries can be perceived as unkind or the opposite of Christlike behavior. Terkeurst explains that not only is that belief incorrect, but it is also not biblical:

“(…) I discovered that boundaries are not just a good idea; they are God’s idea,” she said. “Right from Genesis 1, God formed the earth with boundaries. And then, in the first recorded conversation between God and men (Adam) in Genesis 2, God chose the subject of boundaries (…). I find that fascinating.”

Setting Boundaries

Just as it was for Adam and Eve, setting limits is not meant to bind or hurt our relationships. On the contrary, it is intended to set us free and protect us.

Ultimately, setting boundaries is an expression of love. Because allowing our loved ones to push our limits continually is not an expression of love. It’s called enabling bad behavior.

When we set boundaries from a place of love instead of bitterness, we invite our relationships to grow deeper, become more honest, and love people without losing ourselves.

That is certainly a New Year’s goal worth pursuing.

Years ago, when our oldest daughter was in fourth grade, her public school’s music teacher put together a “holiday musical” as part of the elementary school curriculum.

As I browsed the script that my daughter brought home, I saw a variety of holidays celebrated in traditional songs. From Hannukah to Kwanza, from Bodhi Day to Yule, songs celebrating various cultures and religions filled the score. When I got to the end of the music sheet, I could not believe my eyes. To my great surprise, not one Christmas song was included.

Now, we are in the deep south, the “Bible belt.” Why on earth would a teacher not include Christmas in a December “Holiday Musical” for ten-year-old kids?

I certainly expected the musical to include other faith traditions. But excluding the one holiday most kids in that school celebrate in December is unacceptable.

I set up a meeting with the teacher and confronted her about her musical choice. I was nice, really nice. But point-blank.

“I certainly expect you to include other religions that have holidays in December, but what about Christmas? Why was it not included?”

Her response? The musical was reviewed by a committee and was chosen as the Holiday piece for the year.

Well, that made everything better, didn’t it?

Now we had an entire committee declaring war on Christmas!

She would not change her choice and was condescending, giving me an attitude as I stated their decision was wrong.

Guess whose daughter did not sing in the “Holiday Musical” that year? That’s right.

We did not come back to that school the following year, either.

Christian leaders’ Discouragement Rising Daily

As I read the introduction of Jim Cymbala’s new book in preparation for our interview, I was startled by the most recent statistics concerning church attendance in America.

According to a recent Gallup poll, this is the first time since the 1930s that the number of Americans who describe themselves as affiliated with a church, synagogue or mosque has fallen below 50%. Church attendance is even lower, as another recent survey showed that only about a third of Americans attended services every week or almost every week in 2020, and more than 50% said they “seldom” or “never” did.

The issue is even more troubling among pastors and church leaders, and it presented the reason Pastor Cymbala felt led to write “Fan the Flame – Let Jesus Renew Your Calling and Revive Your Church.”

Cymbala has been a pastor for over 50 years at the renowned Brooklyn Tabernacle, where he started the church with only 20 members, which has grown to thousands attending services and prayer meetings each week. The church is known worldwide for the Grammy Award-winning Brooklyn Tabernacle choir, led by Cymbala’s wife, Carol.

As the pandemic started, the Cymbalas were stranded in Florida, where they had traveled for a short vacation and could not go back to New York for a year. While in Florida, Cymbala began reaching out to local pastors to support them in their growing discouragement. Churches were in lockdown. Their finances were running dry. In a world filled with social and political turmoil, many pastors were treated with contempt as they preached to a highly polarized flock.

A recent survey from the Barna Group highlighted the discouragement that Cymbala encountered coming from church leaders from various denominations. The survey revealed that about 1,500 pastors leave the ministry every month nowadays. And worse yet, more than half of the pastors polled said they would leave the ministry if they could find another way to support their families.

The eye-opening, disheartening data reveals the truth about a problem anyone involved in ministry faces at some point. It is discouraging when one follows their calling and spends years working with little to no fruit or when strong opposition strikes. As Cymbala writes: “Even if a leader has been truly called, the lack of spiritual fruit leads to hidden frustration and discouragement. There comes a time when (the leader) can’t hide it anymore. (…)”

Flame the Fire is undoubtedly a book for such a time as this. With the life and ministry of the apostle Paul as the backdrop at the beginning of Christianity in the Roman Empire of the first century, the book offers essential principles and lessons from a time when antagonism against Christianity was rampant and life-threatening to church leaders and Christ-followers alike.

The post-pandemic church may seem to be in trouble. From people choosing not to go back to attending in person to thousands of ministers giving up on their calling, the issue may render us concerned about the church’s future and its leaders. But any concern should only prompt pastors, leaders, and their flock to seek God more passionately than ever.

May we intentionally lift our voices to pray for our religious leaders, asking the one who called them to reignite the flame that once set them on the course to fulfill their destiny.

And as our hearts threaten to feel troubled for the future of the church, may we be reminded of this eternal truth, declared by the prophet Isaiah in the Old Testament:

“The Lord of Hosts has sworn: ‘Surely, as I have planned, so will it be; as I have purposed, so will it stand.’”
