When Eliab, David’s oldest brother, heard him speaking with the men, he burned with anger at him and asked, “Why have you come down here? And with whom did you leave those few sheep in the wilderness? I know how conceited you are and how wicked your heart is; you came down only to watch the battle.” 1 Samuel 17:28

The Bible does not give us the time lapse between David’s anointing by Samuel as Israel’s future king and the scene that took place in the Valley of Elah. We know, however, that David split time between his anointing and the battle against the Philistines between his father’s sheep farm and the king’s palace, where he played the harp to soothe Saul’s tormented heart.

Jesse’s three oldest sons –Eliab, Abinadab and Shammah, had left the farm and enlisted in Saul’s army. Their father was concerned with his sons’ well-being and sent David to check on them and bring them food. As we read on, we watch David arriving at the camp, just to find an entire army trembling in fear at the sight of its powerful enemy, led by a nine-foot-tall giant who dared shout blasphemies against Israel’s God.

They had forgotten Who led their army.

“Whenever the Israelites saw the man, they all fled from him in great fear.” 1 Samuel 17:24

David wanted to know more. So, he asked around for details of what was happening and how on earth Israel intended to stop the affront.

“Who is this uncircumcised Philistine that he should defy the armies of the living God?” (v.26)

Eliab – Jesse’s firstborn – was standing nearby, looking at David contemptuously. Anger burned within. “What on earth is this arrogant brat doing here?” – he must have thought. He then took a step forward and decided to stop the nonsense.

“What are you doing here? Where did you leave the sheep? Why are you not doing your job? I know you think you are all that and your heart is wicked. You just want to watch us get a whooping, don’t you?”

You’ll see that my paraphrasing is pretty accurate if you read his words. There’s no question David is not Eliab’s favorite.

But, wait a minute. Think about it.

Jesse’s handsome firstborn had been close to becoming king. When Samuel visited their farm, Eliab was the first son paraded in front of the prophet. Samuel thought he was it. You can picture the prophet’s face light up when he saw the strong-looking, handsome man. Eliab almost felt the first drop of oil fall on his head when Yahweh stopped the prophet in his tracks, redirecting his attention to the next son. And then the next. And the next…

Seven times was Samuel instructed to look on… until his eyes fell upon little David.

To say Eliab resented David is an understatement. The anger in his words says it all. And David’s answer tells us more about this family conflict:

“Now what have I done?” said David. “Can’t I even speak?” (v.29)

What David really meant to ask was… “what have I done NOW?”

It certainly was not the first time Eliab showed dislike for his little brother. Likewise, by the way that their father almost dismissed David during the King selection process and Eliab’s disdain, there’s no question David was overlooked, underappreciated, and even scorned by his own.

Can you relate?

Have you ever felt unappreciated, neglected, underestimated, perhaps forgotten even? Have you ever thought… If I did not wake up tomorrow, would anyone even miss me? Does my opinion even matter? Will I ever be noticed?

Have you ever felt unappreciated, neglected, underestimated, perhaps forgotten even? Have you ever thought… If I did not wake up tomorrow, would anyone even miss me?
At work, school, and even at home, so many people live daily feeling like no one sees them.

They may be the last player chosen on a team, get passed over for a promotion, or sit alone at a lunch table at school. They may live in a house full of people… and yet, feel hopelessly alone.

They may walk the hallways of our churches, longing for someone to care. Wishing someone would see past their cordial smiles and into their broken lives. Within their hearts, a longing grows as they feel less and less connected to the world around them.

For some… the longing turns into depression, and the depression turns into despair.

“Will anyone ever see me? Listen to me? Want me?”

Can I tell you something?

If today you feel neglected, forgotten and unappreciated, you are in good company. The only character in the Bible who God called “a man after His own heart” (Acts 13:22) was overlooked, persecuted and underestimated too.

He was small in stature, and that’s what the world focused on. He was plain in looks, and his profession was not glamorous. And still, Someone more important than his family, his friends and foe alike, saw him.

He.saw.him.

And that was enough for David.

David knew his limitations. He knew he was indeed not “all that.” But he knew the One he loved with all his heart was. And that’s what he anchored his mind and heart on every time the world turned against him.

Yes. That was David’s secret to victory. Whenever despair, persecution, or loneliness haunted him, he invited Yahweh to fill the void.

It may be that you feel small today. Unwanted. Alone.

King David, the shepherd boy who knew rejection, loneliness and persecution, sings from the pages of Scriptures, reminding your broken heart today:

The One who made you and knows your heart… NEVER forgets you. And there will be times in life when knowing that truth must be enough.

Standing at nearly ten-foot-tall, the man must have looked like an armored tank to young David. He wore a helmet of brass upon his head and a coat of scale armor of about 125 pounds of bronze. The bible describes the armor and war tools in detail, giving us a vivid picture of Goliath’s fearsome stature and strength.

David had come up from Bethlehem with the mere purpose of bringing food to his brothers, who were battling the Philistines in the valley of Elah. But as he arrived at the camp, he heard Goliath’s defiance and blasphemy against Israel’s God.

And just like that, the battle became his.

As David goes before Saul to ask permission to fight Goliath, his small stature surprises the king. He was but a boy, compared to the giant. Saul didn’t see how he could win.

And then David tells him the story.

“Your servant has been keeping his father’s sheep. When a lion or a bear came and carried off a sheep from the flock, I went after it, struck it and rescued the sheep from its mouth. When it turned on me, I seized it by its hair, struck it and killed it. Your servant has killed both the lion and the bear; this uncircumcised Philistine will be like one of them, because he has defied the armies of the living God.

The Lord who rescued me from the paw of the lion and the paw of the bear will rescue me from the hand of this Philistine.” (1 Samuel 17:34-37 NASB)

WOW.

As I read this story for the umpteenth time this morning, my heart filled with new wonder.

I imagine that the whole incident with the lion and the bear back in Bethlehem made more sense to David when he stood before Saul and pled his case that day. The lion and the bear were an instrument, an opportunity disguised as danger. Indeed, David must have realized that the fight with those strong and mighty animals was but an exercise to prepare him to fight the enemies of Israel.

The lion and the bear were an opportunity disguised as danger.
And to equip him to become King.

He knew he couldn’t have killed a lion and a bear… And yet, he did.

There was only one possibility.

His deliverance back in Bethlehem’s pastures did not come from his own strength. It had to be supernatural. God’s own weight brought the wild animals down to protect His anointed one. And now (David knew), beyond the shadow of a doubt, that the same strength and guidance that made him kill the bear and the lion… would be with him in the valley of Elah.

He drew strength from his past… and aimed for the future. With one small round stone, righteous indignation and zealous love for Yahweh, he pointed and shot.

God took that small stone and made it hit Goliath with the weight of a boulder.

God took a small stone and made it hit Goliath with the weight of a boulder. #RechargeWednesday
Click To Tweet

“This day the Lord will deliver you into my hands, and I’ll strike you down and cut off your head. This very day I will give the carcasses of the Philistine army to the birds and the wild animals, and the whole world will know that there is a God in Israel.” (1 Samuel 17:46)

Can you picture this small-framed young man standing before the giant with the boldness of a man holding an AR-15?

David drew strength to defy his enemies from the battles he saw God fight in his place. He didn’t draw strength from his own wisdom, his own spower, much less his circumstances. He drew strength from realizing that each time his life was in danger, each time his provision seemed not to be adequate, each time his enemies seemed to be more powerful and his deliverance uncertain, GOD showed up and do what only God can do.

Ohhhh! It’s a halleluiah moment on my desk right now!

Because I may not see my future, but I know this much:

The same God who delivered me from the bears and the lions in my past….

The same God who provided manna in my deserts…

The same God who opened the Red Seas of impossibilities before me over and over again…

He’s got this! Praise His Name!

The same God who delivered me from the bears and the lions in my past, provided manna in my deserts, opened the Red Seas of impossibilities before me… He’s got this!
That’s why I can boldly look at any enemy in the eye, and proclaim to any circumstance I may face:

“As for me, everyone will know that there is a God in Heaven and that it is not by worldly measures or power that He saves. For the battle is His, and He will deliver me from these circumstances. Yet, AGAIN!”

Thomas Edison. Colonel Sanders. Dr. Seuss. Walt Disney. Vincent Van Gogh. Albert Einstein. Helen Keller. Michael Jordan.

If I were to ask anyone to ascribe common adjectives to describe these famous figures, the words “successful” and “persistent” would probably appear on top of the list.

Thomas Edison, the man who revolutionized the world by inventing the light bulb, is known to have failed before succeeding — 1,000 times! Colonel Sanders was rejected repeatedly as he drove around the country, sleeping in his car and knocking on doors trying to promote his famous fried chicken recipe. Beloved author Dr. Seuss had his first book refused by 27 publishers. Vincent Van Gogh sold only one of his 800-plus paintings during his lifetime. Walt Disney was fired from a Missouri newspaper for “not being creative enough.” Six-foot-6-inch Michael Jordan was cut from his high school varsity basketball team his sophomore year for being a mediocre player at 5 foot, 11 inches tall. Albert Einstein did not speak fluently until he was about 9, causing teachers to think he was slow. He was later refused admittance to the Zurich Polytechnic Institute. Helen Keller could not see or hear. And yet, she persevered in creating her own communication systems and became a renowned author, lecturer and political activist.

We applaud their success and benefit from their genius. We cite them as icons of resilience and laud them as the crème de la crème in their field. But if you look at each of these people’s early life, you will see that rejection haunted them until someone believed in them. Thus, many of history’s “greats” were deemed insignificant, inadequate and sometimes even mad. They were almost missed, simply because those around did not look past their awkwardness, flaws or handicap, to realize that there was more than what met the eye.

Scriptures are filled with misfits as well. Men and women who were often viewed as unfit to be used, and yet, their stories of faith and trust in God have inspired and encouraged us for thousands of years.

Perhaps one of Scriptures’ greatest examples of an apparent inadequate and initially overlooked character is David, the shepherd boy turned king.
Click To Tweet

Israel, in her rebellion against God and desire to fit in with the surrounding nations, begged God for a king. God led the prophet Samuel to appoint Saul – a handsome, tall and strong man. Saul had the pedigree, looks, knowledge and capability to become a great king; however, his outward strength hid a weak character and idolatrous nature. After giving him chance after chance, God rejected Saul as king, and directed Samuel to anoint the next Jewish leader.

The prophet was led to Bethlehem of Judea, to the house of Jesse — a sheep breeder and devout Jew from the tribe of Judah.

Jesse had eight sons. When Samuel laid eyes on Jesse’s firstborn, he was certainly impressed. He thought to himself: “Surely the Lord’s anointed stands here before the Lord.” But Scriptures say that God redirected Samuel’s focus immediately: “Do not consider his appearance or his height, for I have rejected him. The Lord does not look at the things people look at. People look at the outward appearance, but the Lord looks at the heart.” (1 Samuel 16:6-7) Next, Jesse paraded seven of his sons before the prophet, none of which turned out to be God’s choice. It wasn’t until Samuel inquired if Jesse had any more sons that the patriarch thought of David.

An afterthought. The stinky, frail, shepherd boy was not even in his father’s radar! And yet, he was God’s chosen one. The very one rejected by society’s standards as a lowly shepherd and overlooked by those closer to him for his youth and small frame, became the king from whose lineage Israel’s Messiah would come.

Yes. A list of history’s “greats” would be incomplete without several Bible personalities, certainly including the young shepherd boy whose small frame inspired mockery, but whose character stood a head taller than everyone else.

When resilience meets a clean heart and strong faith, the result is a life that conquers limitations, defies the norm and can even be used by God to accomplish the impossible.
Click To Tweet

Thank you all, for Recharging with us!

I tend to view every glass half full and look for the bright side of most situations. If I can’t find a bright side, I will take a steel wool pad to it and try to scrub enough gunk off to find a shiny spot. I’m more prone to working it out than clutching my pearls.

Recently I’ve had my pearls in a death grip.

A situation popped up and in a matter of minutes we were reeling in shock and moving toward terror. It was the sort of thing that comes out of nowhere.

Life demands that we keep putting one foot in front of the other, and we have, but I am keenly aware that I have a death grip on those pearls. One hand reaching toward God and the other firmly attached to my fear.

Where do we find courage to move forward when the ground is shaking under our feet and the future is uncertain and in the hands of strangers?

For weeks, I have feared the worst and trembled at the thought of the potential damage. I’ve yelled at God and asked him how dare He allow it. And in case you’re wondering, He’s okay with that. He can handle my anger, frustration and grief. If you aren’t convinced, check out David’s rant:

How long, O Lord? Will you forget me forever?
How long will you hide your face from me?
How long must I take counsel in my soul and have sorrow in my heart all the day?
How long shall my enemy be exalted over me? Psalm 13: 1-2 ESV

He listened, I’m sure of it, but I wasn’t hearing much from Him. Crickets. There were accusations from a dark place: “He’s forgotten you and your loves. He’s turned away – you are on your own and this is hopeless. This will not end well. You’d better start working on Plan B.”

When you walk with Jesus, there is no Plan B. Faith is like that. It’s either all in or all out. You can’t just sprinkle a little faith over a situation. @lreep
Click To Tweet

I have a great analogy that involves a litter box and a sick cat, but let’s just go with we either allow Him to replace our unbelief with absolute faith in Him or we wallow around in doubt while clinging to a skinny thread of faith. The latter stinks.

Around the same time, I began studying David’s life. One of my favorite stories is of David defeating Goliath, that giant who terrified and taunted the Israelite army. David, a mere boy, saw past the Philistine’s threats and insults against the power and promise of God. David didn’t have confidence in his abilities or in the armor his brothers tried to drape over his slight frame.

David’s confidence was in God and he put every bit of his trust in Him.

The massive Goliath taunted and threatened the young boy, but David stepped forward in confidence that God had prepared him for this. Those long nights protecting and defending the sheep were his classroom and he was ready for what could be his final exam.

David was fearless because he remembered God’s faithfulness.

I loosened the grip on my pearls. Really, God? You’ve got this? Because from here it doesn’t seem like You do and I’m terrified.

It’s okay, baby girl. I know you are afraid. When you gaze at the world that wants to destroy you or the ones you love, you will always be afraid. Look at My face. I’m right here.

Fear always has its roots in unbelief.

Only God, when we remember His faithfulness, can make us brave. And until we are brave, we can’t hold space for hope for others. We choose to believe Him.

I don’t know how this will work out, but I know this much for sure. God sees my family. He sees every one of us, from the oldest to the youngest. He is alive and pressing into this situation even when it feels like He’s looked away. He has not turned his head; He is right in the middle of all of it.

Let go of those pearls, He says. I’m going to show you a better way than steel wool and pearl clutching.

I believe that I shall look upon the goodness of the Lord
in the land of the living!
Wait for the Lord; be strong,
and let your heart take courage;
wait for the Lord. Psalm 27:13-14 ESV

Wait for the Lord; then you will have courage and hold space for hope, for yourself and for the battle-weary all around you. @lreep
Click To Tweet

His promises are true, friends, even when all we can see is a loud-mouth giant; when the noise of his threats and taunts wants to discourage and defeat.

Wait for the Lord.

For more on this passage, read 2 Samuel 21

“Now when the Philistines were at war again with Israel, David went down and his servants with him; and as they fought against the Philistines, David became weary. Then Ishbi-benob, who was among the descendants of the giant, the weight of whose spear was three hundred shekels of bronze in weight, was girded with a new sword, and he intended to kill David. But Abishai the son of Zeruiah helped him, and struck the Philistine and killed him. Then the men of David swore to him, saying, “You shall not go out again with us to battle, so that you do not extinguish the lamp of Israel.” (2 Samuel 21:15-17 – NASB – emphasis added)

According to scholars, the date of the events in these last chapters of 2 Samuel are uncertain. But we know that they happened towards the end of King David’s reign, after Absalom’s and Sheba’s rebellion.

The surroundings were familiar. The sounds were the same. Battle sounds.

Indeed, the scene depicted on the twenty-first chapter of 2 Samuel must have felt as déjà vu for old King David. Although the Philistines had been subdued so that their army was modest in size, they still had giants to bring to battle.

And as long as there were giants to fight the anointed King of Israel, the enemy would never give up.

Four Goliaths this time!

Four descendants of the one brought down with a little stone and whole lot of faith, had come to revenge their father.

Nope, the Giants never give up.

It’s a passage in the history of King David that one can easily skim through without second thought.

It’s the winding down of a life marked by righteousness and sin, victories and defeats, strengths and weaknesses.

It’s the fight against his last enemies, who were much like his first. Only more.

And yet, as the king drew strength from his God, leaning on the people who loved him to protect him, victory was his yet again. David fainted… but he did not flee. He kept his ground, and even though others fought for him, the victory was still his.

This account of the life of David, carefully placed, just before his song of deliverance and his last song (2 Samuel 22,23), taught me several lessons regarding the battles I face.

It’s a strong reminder that the giants never give up on those who seek to please God. Rather, they often become bigger, mightier, more…

Giants never give up on those who seek to please God. Rather, they often become bigger, mightier, more
Click To Tweet

It reminds me that my strength may fail me in battle. And I may become weary, and discouraged (v.15). And yet, so long as my heart is anchored on my God… so long as my life reflects His righteousness, justice, goodness and love, I have nothing to fear.

I may be too weak to fight, but even then, He sends friends who lift me up in prayer, thus strengthening my arms for battle… and sometimes even fighting the giants for me.

Like Aaron and Hur for Moses… (Exodus 17:12)

Like Abishai for David… (v.17)

The story made me realize that the giants may come back with stronger weapons and new tactics, but so long as I have Yahweh on my side, even in my weakest moment, I am strong In Him.

It’s true, my friend – powerful enemies will never give up on God’s people.

But neither does our God!

Trust Him for the battle. It belongs to Him, anyway.

David shouted this Truth to that first Giant, when he was but a boy. And watched it continue to unfold until the day he died:

The battle is the Lord’s! The battle is the Lord’s! (1 Samuel 17:47)

Your battle belongs to your God.

Your only job is to love and obey Him.

The rest… is His to do.

Are giants taunting you again?

Are they even stronger than before? Bigger? More?

My prayer is that you stand up, and do as David did:

Do your part – do not give up. Get up and fight. (v.15)

Ask for reinforcements – Call on a few good men (and women) to pray. (v.17-22)

But first and foremost, rest in the assurance that God is fighting for you.

He always will.

When you face your giants that way, you can confidently join King David’s song:

“For by You I can run upon a troop;

By my God I can leap over a wall.

“As for God, His way is blameless;

The word of the Lord is tested;

He is a shield to all who take refuge in Him.

“For who is God, besides the Lord?

And who is a rock, besides our God?

(2 Samuel 22:30-32)

Standing at nearly ten-foot-tall, the man must have looked like an armored tank to young David. He wore a helmet of brass upon his head and a coat of scale armor of about 125 pounds of bronze. The bible describes the armor and war tools in details, giving us a vivid picture of Goliath’s fearsome stature and strength.

David had come up from Bethlehem with the mere purpose of bringing food to his brothers, who were battling the Philistines in the valley of Elah. But as he arrived at the camp, he heard Goliath’s defiance and blasphemy against Israel’s God.

And thus the battle became his.

Indeed, David must have realized that the fight with those strong and mighty animals were but an exercise to prepare him to fight the enemies of Israel.

And now, David knew, beyond the shadow of a doubt, that the same strength and guidance that made him kill the bear and the lion… would be with him in the valley of Elah.

He drew strength from his past… and aimed for the future. With one small round stone, righteous indignation and zealous love for Yahweh, he pointed and shot.

God took that small stone and made it hit Goliath with the weight of a boulder.

“This day the Lord will deliver you into my hands, and I’ll strike you down and cut off your head. This very day I will give the carcasses of the Philistine army to the birds and the wild animals, and the whole world will know that there is a God in Israel.” (vs.46)

Can you picture this small-framed young man standing before the giant with the boldness of a man holding an AR-15?

I smile because I think of the repeated trials in my life… and how each victory has strengthened my resolve to proclaim to the world:

It’s ok… God’s got this. Been there, done that. Have the T-shirt to prove it.

And the scars to remind me.

David drew strength to defy his enemies from the battles he saw God fight in his place. He didn’t draw strength from his wisdom, his power, much less his circumstances.

He drew strength from realizing that each time his life was in danger, each time his provision seemed not to be adequate, each time his enemies seemed to be more powerful and his deliverance uncertain, GOD would show up and do what only God can do.

Ohhhh! It’s a halleluiah moment on my desk right now!

Because I may not see my future, but I know this much:
